Mr James Terry Head of Sixth Form
e mail: jrterr@hcsch.org

'As an independent co-educational Sixth Form we offer our students not just an excellent academic education but also wonderful opportunities. Our sixth-formers leave us well-rounded individuals who confidently take on the next phase of their lives.'

James Terry'At a time when large impersonal Sixth Forms are emerging we provide a caring and Friendly environment.  Every student is genuinely known and cared about.  Adjusting to the greater Freedom and opportunities of sixth form life can seem daunting. The tutorial and house system ensures there is always constructive and helpful advice when they need it. The academic departments and pastoral team work closely and communicate to ensure all students are achieving their full potential.

The extra curricular opportunities are excellent. We have very strong Games, Music and Drama Departments, which have a policy of inclusion and encouragement for everyone in the Sixth Form. We have a strong academic tradition but also believe in the development of the whole person.'

James Terry is a warm and genuine likeable teacher, lively and humorous with hints of flights of fancy, was he really a centerfold pinup for the Monmouth school magazine? What was forever apparent throughout his interview was his total commitment to ensuring the success of the Sixth Form at Hereford Cathedral School. When asked why he had applied for this position, and indeed returned to a school in which he had previously taught , his reply was that he liked a challenge, enjoyed responsibility and believed strongly that the atmosphere and ethos of Hereford Cathedral School was second to none. He quipped that in a position such as the Head of Sixth Form if he got it wrong it would be a very public humiliation.

When questioned what his priorities are his instant reply was that he needed to be available and wanted to improve the quality of the Sixth Form, such as the recent developments in the recreational and study areas of the new Sixth Form Centre. He believes that the transition from GCSE pupil to Sixth Form Student is much harder today as examination pressures of the AS system are immediate. He believes that Lower Sixth Formers require guidance on how best to use their study time, cope with long term work deadlines and grow independently. When pressed about what he would like to change he was full of ideas, such as developing the Sixth Form Council, improving links with local secondary schools, arts and society lectures and of course maintaining and improving the A level examination results.

Independence was a theme of the interview as he believed that the the ultimate aim of education in a school such as Hereford Cathedral School was that the Sixth Form experience should thoroughly prepare people for their future and create well rounded adults that were prepared to take risks, enjoyed challenge and grew with responsibility.
